I shape copper, glass, and a wide variety of materials into representational sculpture. I work to evoke an appreciation of form and surprise in the viewer. Being primarily self-taught frees me to use a variety of tools and techniques, and borrow I from numerous metal working disciplines. For a single piece I may look to the toolbox of the auto body shop, the carpenter, a jeweler, and an art glass master. I use hand tools to cut and shape metal, and employ both hot and mechanical joining methods. Texture and dimension are added with repoussé, chasing, patinas, mixed materials, and found objects. I leave most of my work unsealed to naturally age with time. An appreciation of nature and a background in environmental science feed into my botanical themes. My more whimisical pieces are lighthearted, and celebrate the joy of creating. My work has moved toward a “steampunk” style. I find myself intrigued by the marriage of the mechanical with the natural, and the future with the past in these designs. The materials I use can lend themselves to both outdoor and indoor settings, and my sculptures find homes in both.
